Sinkhole repairs on I-24 to be extensive and cost more than $850,000

The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) announced plans to repair a sinkhole on Interstate 24 in Montgomery County. Drivers should expect delays as crews complete a temporary detour and perform an extensive repair expected to last into September.
TDOT crews began work to create a temporary one‑lane roadway on I‑24 eastbound at mile marker 9.4 to route traffic around the affected section while repairs are completed. The full sinkhole repair work was scheduled to begin Friday, Sept. 7, 2018.
Repair plan and timeline:
- Excavate the sinkhole down to bedrock.
- Install geotextile fabric as a stabilizing layer.
- Backfill and compact the area with solid rock.
- Target reopening of the affected eastbound lane: morning of Monday, Sept. 10, 2018.
TDOT said crews would continue monitoring the area for safety concerns and would close the interstate to eastbound traffic if conditions became hazardous. The sinkhole originally opened during heavy rain associated with Hurricane Harvey in the previous fall.
The emergency repair contract was awarded to Parchman Construction. TDOT estimated the project cost would top $864,000.
