KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — The road around McGhee Tyson Airport has reopened after a temporary closure caused by a sinkhole.
An airport spokesperson said a sinkhole opened underneath Airport Loop Road (also known as Terminal Loop Drive) on the back side of the parking garage at around 7 p.m. on June 12. Airport Loop Road is the primary road that circles the terminal building and garage.
The airport posted an update on X (formerly Twitter) at about 11:30 p.m. confirming Airport Loop Road had been repaired and reopened to traffic.
During the closure, airport visitors were directed to follow alternative routes. Travelers were advised to arrive at least three hours before scheduled flights to accommodate the temporary route changes.
Those picking up passengers were asked to use the free Phone and Wait Lot as a designated meeting location unless the passenger was ready at the curb.

Airport officials and repair crews acted quickly to assess and fix the damaged roadway; no long-term disruptions were reported after reopening.
