☄️VIDEO: ‘Fireball’ in sky may have crashed through home, officials say
A bright “fireball” lighting the sky over the Upstate on June 26, 2025, may have produced meteorite fragments that struck a home in Georgia.
Viewers across the Upstate of South Carolina and neighboring Georgia reported seeing an intense fireball around 12:20 p.m. Local and regional agencies — including the National Weather Service and NASA analysts — tracked the event.
NASA characterized the object as a superbolide, an extremely bright meteor roughly one meter in diameter traveling an estimated 29,000 miles per hour. Multiple observers also reported loud sonic booms along the fireball’s ground track.
Residents in the Blacksville, Georgia area have reported finding multiple small meteorites, suggesting the meteoroid fragmented as it entered the atmosphere. FOX Carolina’s sister station WANF in Atlanta reported that Henry County officials responded to a home where the resident said a rock crashed through the roof and into the house.
Henry County Emergency Management spokesperson Ryan Morrison told FOX Carolina: “A piece of unidentified debris penetrated the roof of a residence and entered the home, with no reported injuries. At this time, the exact nature of the object has not been confirmed… the debris may be either a fragment of a meteor or potentially space debris.”
The National Weather Service and local emergency managers canvassed the area and multiple Upstate fire departments searched for possible fall sites in case additional fragments landed in South Carolina.
What’s the difference between a meteor and a meteorite? A meteor is the bright streak you see as a small space rock burns up entering Earth’s atmosphere. A meteorite is any piece that survives passage through the atmosphere and reaches the ground.
Radar and lightning-detection networks captured signatures of the event. NASA’s data show the fall in multiple NEXRAD and TDWR radars, supporting eyewitness accounts and reports of sonic booms.
Officials ask anyone who photographed or recorded the event to share images and video with local stations and emergency management to help document the fall and locate fragments safely. For continuing updates, see the original report: FOX Carolina — Fireball may have crashed through home.
