Sinkhole repairs on I-24 to be extensive and cost more than $850,000
TDOT schedules major repairs after sinkhole appears on I-24 in Montgomery County
The Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) plans an extensive repair project for a sinkhole on Interstate 24 in Montgomery County. Drivers should prepare for delays while crews complete emergency stabilization and permanent repairs.

Timeline and scope of work
- Work began with construction of a temporary one-lane road on I-24 eastbound at mile marker 9.4 so traffic can be routed around the repair zone.
- The main repair work was scheduled to start Friday, Sept. 7. Crews will excavate the sinkhole down to bedrock, install geotextile fabric, and refill the void with solid rock to restore stability.
- TDOT expected the repaired section of I-24 to reopen the morning of Monday, Sept. 10, barring further complications.
Cost, contractor and safety
The emergency repair contract was awarded to Parchman Construction, and the cost is expected to exceed $864,000. TDOT crews continued to monitor the area for additional movement; if conditions became hazardous the interstate would be shut to eastbound traffic to protect motorists.
Cause and context
Officials said the sinkhole developed during heavy rains associated with Hurricane Harvey last fall. Such weather-related erosion can undermine pavement and soil, leading to sudden roadway collapse.
