Live Oak, FL — A sinkhole briefly closed East U.S. Highway 90
Jason Futch — A substantial sinkhole developed along East U.S. Highway 90 near Dowling Avenue in Live Oak on Monday afternoon, Aug. 25, 2025. The roadway developed a depression at approximately 3:45 p.m. that quickly began to cave in, prompting traffic closures and an overnight repair effort.
What happened
Live Oak Police Department Lt. Doug Hohman and city public works crews arrived after the initial report of a road depression. Shortly after their arrival the surface began to cave in and officers recorded video of the collapse. Authorities closed the road to investigate and keep motorists safe.
Response and repairs
- Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) crews and the City of Live Oak Public Works Department responded and worked through the night.
- Crews filled the hole and installed a metal plate to stabilize the roadway.
- The highway was reopened to traffic the following morning, Tuesday, Aug. 26, after temporary repairs made the road accessible.
Investigation and outlook
The cause of the sinkhole remains under investigation. City and FDOT officials will review the site to determine permanent repairs. Riverbend News attempted to contact City Public Works Director Jerald Lee but had not reached him by press time.
Safety and travel
Motorists should follow official traffic advisories and detours during repairs. Sinkholes can develop rapidly and create hazardous driving conditions — report roadway issues to local authorities and avoid driving near damaged pavement.
